I will preface this by stating that I am a diehard Kearsley fan, and some of my top 10 books are The Winter Sea, The Rose Garden, and Mariana – The Firebird, not so much. But almost every time I read one of her books, I need at least a few days to decompress and this one was no different. I finished this several days ago, but I am still reliving scenes and conversations, being so moved by the tenderness of the characters and the beauty of the prose. Kearsley continues to be one of my favorites.

Although I love the timeslip/paranormal elements she is noted for, I was impressed to see Kearsley try her hand at a different tack. She continues to weave the historical story with a modern day tale, but this time there was no direct connection between the characters, only a comparison, and Kearsley shows the reader how we write our own life stories. This was beautifully and subtly done, which is one of the reasons I love this author. Like several of her other books, the setting is the time of the Jacobites, and some characters from her previous books make an appearance. However, unlike “The Firebird,” I never once felt that the reader could not appreciate this story without reading her previous stories. It is clearly a stand-alone, in many ways.

Kearsley’s romances are rich and slow to evolve, which makes the reading that much more enjoyable. The parallel stories, told in alternating chapters, are intriguing and unique in their own right. The modern day tale was not very complicated, and maybe a bit rushed, but still a sweet story. The historical tale, however, was incredibly moving, unpredictable and bittersweet. I appreciated the absence of the clichéd, devastatingly handsome hero. In fact, I thought the H was the villain for the first quarter of the book. Without spilling too many beans, this was a refreshing perspective on what makes someone “attractive.” I will admit I loved the historical tale so much more that I will probably reread those chapters alone so that I can savor it once again. And the H? He was very handsome!

Kearsley finishes her book with a very interesting description of the research which contributed to the development of the story. This was fascinating, and was no less than I expected from her. All I will say is the last paragraph moved me almost as much as the rest of the book, and just shows her continued talent in telling a tale worth telling.

I highly recommend this book.

A Desperate Fortune Susanna Kearsley 0760789246999 Books Reviews

AMAZING. I truly don't know where to begin! I guess I'll start by saying that while I have not read every book by Ms. Kearsley, I've read a few and have always loved them..my favorite being The Rose Garden. This one however, touched my heart and soul and left me wanting to start the whole thing all over again! I got sooo attached to these characters and am sad it had to end, but it will absolutely be re-read!

The way she combines the past and present, the way her characters grow and have depth, the scenery, the HISTORY, the ROMANCE, it just all blew me away in this one. She truly puts so much effort into researching, and writes in such a way that you never get bored. And creating a character that had Asperger's syndrome was also very interesting to learn about since I didn't know much about that beforehand. To me, it only made the character more interesting and relatable. The beginning may have started out slow when compared to the rest of the book, but it didn't even matter because the solid, intriguing, suspenseful plot all made up for it. Everything came together so well and the two stories of Sara and Mary weaved together brilliantly. So, if by some chance you are worried about having two separate stories being told (one past, one present) please don't be! Nothing is ever confusing and you definitely never forget which one you are reading about!

Now a word for HUGH! I fell hard for this one! His story combines with Mary's in the "past" parts of the book and I don't think I've ever been so intrigued by a character! He was a man of few words most definitely, but I NEVER felt disconnected from him. This is what Ms. Kearsley is SO good at--making us fall for these characters even if they aren't chatty cathy's because you FEEL them and their emotions.

So, all in all, I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves romance, Scottish history or even just history in general, you won't be disappointed! And if this era isn't something you're into, I encourage you to check out her other work because you'll find there is a little something for everyone. I am certainly glad I did!
