This book has some good aspects. The descriptions of the deaths of the victims are really dark and detailed, adding an essential creepiness to the book. I liked the symbolism of the ravens and the tarot cards. It is obvious that the author did a lot of research and the writing is good.
The reason I’m giving this book only four stars is because I didn’t like the love plot. I didn’t care about it, probably because it seems very unrealistic to fall in love with someone so hard and fast. I also thought it was cliché, especially how they fought and reconciled. The first few weeks—if not the first few years—of a relationship should be a lot smoother than that. If a guy got mad at me without superb reason within the first week we were dating... yup, I’d be out of there. I actually would’ve preferred this if the author omitted the love plot entirely.
That said, I do recommend this book for a fast, easy read. Where the romance lacks, the author devotes much more to characterization.
Conspiracy of Ravens is a breath of fresh air to all those other male dominated serial killer novels. Female serial killers are not very common and Vaughn does a good job of making The Raven Witch Killer believable.

The story's protagonist, Sophia Pascal, is a no nonsense woman. She is smart, strong and career oriented. She's also a bit of a smart ass and sticks up for herself. She's your average everyday honest gal just trying to make a living as a journalist.

Enter Catherine Maera. The perfect antagonist, she is the evil to Sophia's good. After confessing to murder, Catherine is temporarily held at the state prison where she agrees to provide details for the murders she has committed, but only if Sophia is conducting the interviews. It seems that these two have a shared talent and history.

The dialogue between the two is realistic and the pacing of the story is right on (there is no dragging along). Now, I know that Sophia is the main character here, but Catherine just shines. She is so bad, so evil, that you have to appreciate her insanity. Vaughn was true to her character, never wavering, writing dialogue that was grotesquely intriguing.

Vaughn's rich language and thick descriptions are present throughout the novel leading the reader into a world of darkness. What makes this novel unique is Vaughn's dabbling into the occult. As a serial killer, Maera is quite creepy. However, with the addition of the occult into the mix, she is terrifying. Reader beware, there is quite a bit of violence and description of murder. In fact, Vaughn was quite thorough in the different types of murder committed and the range of victims is quite large (SPOILER ALERT we're talking babies and grandmas here). But hey, Maera is a serial killer after all, so....

My one criticism of the book was that I felt it could have been a bit longer. I felt that it left me quite abruptly and I wanted a little more, but that's more likely a reflection on how entertaining the story was.

Though quite gory and gruesome, overall, I found the novel to be very enjoyable.
I came across this book by chance. I met the author through a random encounter on Goodreads and at the end of it, she had agreed to send me a copy, and I agreed to post an honest review. Here it is

Although Conspiracy of Ravens is a blend of genres, I’d call it an occult mystery. It has one of those cozy mystery plots where a reporter is sent out to interview a serial killer and through that interview we discover the nature of the killer’s crimes. Think The Silence of the Lambs. Except this one’s unique, in that the killer seems to have some type of supernatural powers.

At the center of Conspiracy of Ravens is a strong female protagonist who is smart and sarcastic, yet internally conflicted, haunted by a tragic childhood. This protagonist, Sophia, narrates her encounter with the Raven Witch Killer, her polar opposite. There’s a real ying and yang with these two, a real black and white, good vs. evil.

As the narrative continues, Raven Witch Killer details the horrific murders indicative of her name. Each murder coincides with a tarot card, and each victim screams out for sympathy from the reader. There’s no glorified butchering here. Rather, much of the suspense comes from a desire for the victim to somehow escape.

Although the novel primarily revolves around Sophia’s interviews with Raven Witch, there’s a lighter side to the story too. There’s a romance between Sophia and the police officer in charge of the case. Sounds typical, but Vaughan does a fine job making what could have been a side romance into an essential part of the plot.

Another way that Vaughan lightens up an otherwise dark story is through her impressive command of language. Both the use of funny expressions in character dialogue, and the humorous use of metaphor through the voice of the narrator provide much needed comic relief.

I really enjoyed this book. Although it dealt with dark topics, the occult, murder, etc., I felt that it did so without judgement, positive or negative, allowing the reader to explore the ideas presented.
